The Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009
Marine Management Organisation
The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) is established to control marine works in English waters and UK offshore waters. The body controls issues such as marine licensing and the enforcement of marine legislation.
Marine Planning
One requirement of the MMO is to adopt a Strategic Marine Planning System. This system is required to clarify objectives for the future in terms of protecting our seas. A Marine Policy Statement must be produced by the MMO to establish objectives for more efficient and sustainable use of marine resources.
Marine Licensing
The licence application procedure is simplified, now requiring a single licence for all activities. The existing Acts which previously controlled the licensing system are overcome by the UK Marine and Costal Act 2009.
Marine Conservation Zones
These zones are designated in the waters adjacent to England and Wales and UK offshore waters. Such conservation areas are created to slow the deterioration of UK marine biodiversity, and aid recovery where possible.
Coastal Access
This Act states that there must be clearly signed and easily accessible routes around the full English and Welsh coastline.
