The Environment Order 2002 (Northern Ireland)

The Northern Ireland Environment Agency is granted the power to declare areas of land as Areas of Special Scientific Interest (ASSIs).

These areas need protection due to their special flora, fauna, geological or physiographical features. Authorities are required to further conserve and enhance ASSIs. Plus, landowners may not carry out operations likely to damage these areas of land without consent. Alternatively they may be required to carry out certain works to the land for conservation purposes.
